LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE:
CHARTING THE COURSE AHEAD

LCDP Program > Workshop 1

CONTEXT

Leading organizations and teams through the enormous and challenging changes the public service is undergoing requires competent and inspiring leadership. To be effective in managing and championing the change process, many qualities and competencies are required of leaders. Making tough decisions impacting reductions in human resources and services while continuing to manage operations are creating significant challenges for today’s leaders. In this current environment, leaders are expected to encourage and build team morale, invest in developing employees and find creative and innovative solutions in delivering services. Your effectiveness as a leader will depend on how well you function to support and advance this change and transformation process, which leadership qualities you already possess and which need to be further developed to more successfully transition through the change and continue to positively influence your organization.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

As a means of identifying areas requiring development, you and your supervisor will complete a self-assessment questionnaire to determine which of the leadership behaviours are most and least developed in you. This picture of your leadership style will provide the basis for your personal action-based goals to be discussed during the follow-up coaching/mentoring sessions. This 1st workshop, focusing on the attributes of true leadership, will enable you to more clearly identify the leadership competencies that will be discussed in the 2nd workshop dealing with the consequences of change and the important role in communicating as a management tool in times of change. Possessing strong human resources leadership competencies is key in managing people and engaging in difficult conversations with employees - the focus of the 3rd workshop. And in the 4th workshop, strong, confident and competent leaders speak with authority and conviction when briefing senior officials, clients, Ministers, etc.
